Enhanced Access

Kudos to Mary and to David! Kudos to Alyson!
Once upon a time, Alyson was looking at another library website and discovered they had captured the titles of their bibs within their MARC records. She pointed this out to me, whereupon, conversations ensued to educate me about cataloging (is a 20+ old library degree better than no degree in this case?????) and the possibilities that might exist glimmered and beckoned like a mirage.

The damsel in distress in this story are the databases where they lie undiscovered in their ivory tower, errr research databases pages. Those riding to the rescue would be Mary and David who courageously figured out how to add the URL in the MARC record so that the patron could (gasp!) click and enter the World of Databases.

Jill took the concept and applied it so that searching for all of the "Caldecott Medal winners" actually produces all of the titles we own!

If you search for "Morningstar" as a title search, you should see "Connect to Morningstar Online" in the record. Same for Denver Post, Rocky Mountain News and the Wall Street Journal. My brain is exploding with ideas (Mary - don't be scared!) so you will see more of these entries in the future as time permits.

You can probably say that I "lived happily ever" after because I am ecstatic about pushing our ILS in this bad-redo-fairy-tale-style blog. Forgive the mangled fairy tale angle, but you get the gist. Take a look at the records; let me know what'cha think.

The End
