I think we probably do have some overlap in the magazine and newspaper databases we carry, and if usage is limited deselecting one database makes sense. However, we should consider how much duplication is found between Academic Search and OneFile, and which is easier for the general public to use. Another concern of mine would be maintaining access to databases for lifelong learners and homeschoolers who may not have a school library as a resource. One advantage of having a good general magazine database is that it expands the access to popular magazines for our smaller branches who do not have large magazine collections.
One other thing to think about is the number of magazine requests currently processed by our ILO staff. Would our ILO article requests increase if we eliminate one of our magazine databases? The cost for borrowing may be minimal, but it is something to take into consideration.

Joyce, thx for posting to the blog ~ welcome~ you raise great points to consider further. at this point in time, i'm all for leaving the elementary through high school databases alone. i've been hearing from various teachers about how valuable they consider our offerings to supplement theirs. it would be quite interesting to see how much ILO volume we have now and what titles are being requested as we try to balance this large equation of need!
