What is ALD live?

We are planning on featuring video and additional podcasts on our site. ALD live will function as a brand for that kind of content.  Our first video projects should be on our site shortly. Patrons will be able to access to this content  two ways:
  1. We will create a section where all video/podcast content is aggregated in one section accessible by the ALD live logo located on our home page.
  2. Video/podcast content will also be displayed in its appropriate section by subject (ie. book reviews in the books and reading section, database articles in the research tools section). When listed in its section an ALD live logo on the bottom of the article to clearly identify it.

As sexy as video content is, we shouldn't forget that it caters only to the broadband subscriber - not everyone has (or can afford) broadband. Broadband penetration is currently at 50-60% of households in the US (per a recent MSNBC article) so we shouldn't forget that some of our patron base (low income or perhaps the senior population) can't watch this type of content -I think that I was told that the Byers area doesn't even have cable TV (unless that recently changed).

Are there plans to have transcripts of the video/podcasts available for those still using dial-up connections?

in retrospect, perhaps I shouldn't have used the term "sexy" in the same sentence as "video content" - cool, or trendy or radical (if it was the 80's) would have been worked better. Didn't mean to imply that we'd have sexy content... save that for Library 3.0!

Wow the thought of posting transcripts never occurred to me. That is a great idea. My only concern is how much time it would take. Initially we probably won't have a huge volume of video so it should not be a problem. Great idea thanks.

Great idea, Andrew, to have transcripts! It feels so NPR-like..... I agree with Oli's comment about it taking time but let's engage Louise to find a volunteer or two who might be willing to put their talents into typing transcripts for us!
